Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. Giovanni Boffa's entire pictorial production draws inspiration from nature, but the artist reworks it in a highly abstract form that transfigures the painter's own way of perceiving reality. In this particular work, Boffa reflects on the female nude.
Giovanni Boffa's pictorial language can certainly be said to be truly unique and original. His style is decidedly abstract, yet at the same time grounded in a decisive and concrete exaltation of plastic and formal values. In this sense, the work in question is highly significant. Indeed, the reflection on the nude is executed in an extremely synthetic manner, eliminating all contingent data from the subject. Yet this reduction process is carried out precisely to achieve the formal purity of the subject itself, which Boffa always achieves with an elegance of soft and sinuous linear rhythms. In this painting, moreover, this operation is conducted almost as a process of formal analysis, subdividing the painting's surface into three sections, each highlighting the oval. Another peculiarity of Giovanni Boffa's painting style lies in its application, always achieved through dense diagonal hatching that makes his forms vibrant. The color always tends toward monochrome, with predominant hues acquiring precise symbolic meanings.
Giovanni Boffa was born in Turin in 1935. A student of Bacchetta and Piovano, he was also recognized by Felice Casorati for his ability to analyze and interpret reality. Recognized as one of the contemporary masters of Turin painting, he is included in the Turin Museums Guide: the City and the Piedmont Region have dedicated several solo and group exhibitions to him. The artist has also garnered considerable acclaim abroad, participating in group exhibitions in both Paris and New York, including at Artexpò in New York in 2000 and a group show in Hangzhou, China in May 2010. Among his many solo and group exhibitions, it is worth mentioning the 1991 solo exhibition for the 25th anniversary of the founding of the WWF in Rivarolo Canavese, the 1995 solo exhibition "The Reasons of Living" at the Pirelli Foundation in Induno Olona, and a solo exhibition in Paris at the Chambre de Commerce Italienne in 2000. From 2001 to 2009 there were still solo and group exhibitions.
