Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Giovanni Bossi's pictorial production is distinguished by a strong experimental nature that leads him to recontextualize traditional genres such as landscape painting or genre scenes. In his vision, concrete fragments of reality are transfigured into a dreamlike, almost surreal dimension through his expressionist pictorial language.
The style of Rosasco-born artist Giovanni Bossi manages to combine realism and surrealism in a highly personal fusion. The painter always seeks out glimpses of real life, episodes of everyday life, for his subjects. But the way these subjects are treated transcends into a dreamlike dimension. Giovanni Bossi's technique, to this end, is characterized by a highly synthetic application, leveraging the expressive potential of color. In this work, moreover, Bossi uses the fresco technique to achieve an even more instinctive, immediate rendering of the subject, connected to the artist's gestures. Thus, the vision of the urban landscape or a glimpse of everyday life takes on an intangible consistency, like the vision of a memory filtered through the painter's most intimate perception. The constructed space is two-dimensional and enclosed in a dense atmosphere, as befits an apparition. Everything is lost in the decontextualized dimension of a mist that makes things vague not because of meteorological conditions, but because they come from the artist's memory. The color range is designed to confirm this interpretation, focusing on pastel shades that go beyond the naturalistic element.
Giovanni Bossi is an artist originally from Mortara, who lives and works in Rosasco. A multifaceted artist, always striving for new technical experimentation, as Professor Alfredo Pasolino wrote, he realizes "his visionary dream by adding himself to the reason of figurative reality. He abstracts himself in scansions that border on the surreal dream, in the impressionistic sign, in the symbol he can do whatever he wants... he is an innovative master of the sign with good abstraction and the energy of autonomous and creative color."
