Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The painter Giovanni Bossone, in his work, also displays a certain taste for popular and anecdotal genre scenes. His subjects were taken from the interiors of the homes of farmers and shepherds who inhabited his native Ossola Valley.
The painting can be defined as a genre scene not only because of its subject, a folk scene, but also because of the objective and highly didactic language the painter uses. The work's approach is figurative, and Giovanni Bossone demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect realistic rendering in a richly detailed representation. Indeed, it is important to note how the painter does not shy away from using a cursive touch, composed of rapid impressionistic strokes, to ensure greater vivacity and freshness in his execution. Thus, the brushstrokes display a certain level of synthesis, without ever compromising the clarity of the anecdotal and realistic narrative, but just enough to infuse the scene with a delicate lyricism. In short, while the anecdotal subject still reveals the painter's connection to a late Romantic cultural climate, his style shows him to be very much abreast of the modernity of Verist poetry.
Giovanni Bossone (1931–1985) was one of the most important representatives of the renowned family of painters from Ossola. He exhibited extensively, holding around ten solo shows a year at his peak, in various regions of Italy and abroad (he also exhibited in Buenos Aires, Argentina). He was primarily a painter of lyrical mountain landscapes of the Ossola Valley, intimate interiors of peasant homes, and still lifes.
