Giovanni Cappelli was a painter originally from Cesena, born in 1923 and died in 1994 in Bogliaco. He trained as an artist in Bologna, then moved to Turin, where he collaborated with Sughi. Later, in Rome, in 1949, he joined the Portonaccio group. In 1953, he held his first exhibition at the Bergamini Gallery in Milan. In 1956, he participated in the XXVIII Venice Biennale, and the following year in the Exhibition of Italian Realist Drawing in Moscow and Leningrad, as well as in the Exhibition of Young European Painting in Warsaw. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Cesena. In 1977, he founded the Coop. 77 group.
