Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Giovanni Cerri's work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color. The hues themselves lack a complete connection to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. For Giovanni Cerri, the fundamental elements of expression are color and brushstrokes, in a profoundly material and gestural interpretation. The color is distributed in dense, full-bodied layers. Gesture is crucial, capable of giving form to the object with a few essential touches. The result is a powerfully alive and vibrant depiction, in an interpretation of painting that stems from the post-Impressionist tradition and reaches an extraordinary contemporaneity.
Giovanni Cerri was born in 1969 in Milan, where he lives and works. He began exhibiting in 1987 and has since held shows in Italy and abroad (Croatia, Germany, Canada, France, China, Bolivia, Romania, Turkey, and the USA) in public spaces and private galleries. Always drawn to the urban periphery, his research has developed into a thematic investigation of industrial archaeology, with depictions of abandoned factories, derelict areas, and building wrecks on the border between the city and its hinterland. In 2011, invited by curator Vittorio Sgarbi, he exhibited at the Italian Pavilion for the Lombardy Region at the 54th Venice Biennale, and subsequently at the exhibition "Artists for Noto. The Shadow of the Divine in Contemporary Art" at Palazzo Grimani in Venice. In 2013 he held a themed exhibition on Italian cities entitled “Voyage en Italie” at the Orenda Art International in Paris and subsequently exhibited with his father in the exhibition “Giancarlo and Giovanni Cerri, two generations of Milanese artists compared” at the Frankfurter Westend Galerie in Frankfurt am Main.
