Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts a city avenue culminating in a monument. A column surmounted by an unidentifiable figure dominates the center. The bare and bare trees on either side suggest winter, while the cityscape, bustling with cars and pedestrians, captures a moment of everyday life. The gray, hazy atmosphere emphasizes the melancholic and nostalgic nature of the scene.
The style chosen here is close to post-impressionism, with rapid, gestural brushstrokes that lend dynamism to the scene. The muted colors, predominantly grays, browns, and blues, contribute to a cold, atmospheric setting. The forms are condensed, with few details, leaving room for interpretation and the overall impression. This technique manages to evoke not only a physical place, but also an emotion linked to nostalgia for a distant and evocative past.
Giovanni Colombo, better known as Giovanni Da Busnago (Busnago, 1908 – Gaggiano, 1972), was a self-taught Italian painter, known for his urban views and his ability to capture the atmosphere of iconic cities such as Milan, Venice, and Paris. After debuting in the 1930s with several solo exhibitions in Rome, he moved to Milan, which became his adopted city and main source of inspiration. In Milan, he came into contact with the Chiaristi and the painters of the Bagutta Group, influences reflected in his luminous and lively painting. His works focus on the depiction of city views, which manage to convey not only the architectural beauty but also the soul of the cities. Among his most famous paintings is Via Monte di Pietà in 1840 (c. 1970), now preserved in the art collections of the Cariplo Foundation.
