Gianni Del Grasso - Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Gianni Del Grasso is an important landscape painter, heir and continuator of nineteenth-century Neapolitan landscape painting and the Posillipo School.

This is particularly evident formally in a diluted approach that seeks to capture every subtle vibration of color, light, and atmosphere. In this way the pictorial film becomes extremely lively and alive in a landscape lyricism that is nourished not only by the perfection of the naturalistic rendering, but also by the expressive power of the color and the pictorial gesture.

Gianni del Grasso was born in Torre del Greco in 1945. After completing his art studies in Naples and earning a teaching qualification in Drawing and Art History, he immediately embarked on an artistic career, though he never taught. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, always receiving critical and public acclaim. He has won numerous awards. His works are found in numerous Italian, European, and American cities. His pictorial style is rightfully considered one of the most significant proponents of the Neapolitan Posillipo School. While rooted in figurative tradition, the artist always manages to imbue his works with a distinctive style that imbues them with a magical atmosphere.
