Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work demonstrates Giovanni Fattori's technical excellence, not only in painting but also in graphic design. In this case, unable to utilize the expressive medium of brushstrokes and color, the artist demonstrates how, through elegant graphic design, he achieves a high level of realist expressiveness. It also demonstrates Fattori's skill as a draftsman, accustomed to expressing himself primarily in synthetic language in his easel work, capable of achieving a high degree of naturalism. In this drawing, the technical quality is extraordinary, thanks to the precision and naturalness of the depiction of detail (the anatomical accuracy of the horse is extraordinary). Furthermore, the line is extremely soft, creating subtle shadows that further enhance the subject's authenticity, lending it a subtle plasticity.
Giovanni Fattori, born in 1825 in Livorno and died in Florence in 1908, was one of the most important Italian painters of the 19th century, a major exponent of the Macchiaiol movement. Parallel to French Impressionism, beginning in the second half of the 19th century, Macchiaiolism emerged as a reaction to academic painting, but used the technique of staining as its expressive medium. For this group of painters, vision is created by light as a collection of patches of color. Giovanni Fattori and the other Macchiaioli always focused on social themes, coinciding with the Verist movement in literature.
