Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso.
This work demonstrates Giovanni Fattori's technical excellence, not only in painting but also in graphic design. In this case, unable to utilize the expressive medium of brushstrokes and color, the artist demonstrates how, through intricate linear drawing, he achieves a high level of realistic expressiveness. With just a few graphic strokes, Fattori manages to convey the subject's volume and delineate the interplay of light and shadow. Above all, this drawing also conveys the physical effort, fatigue, and dust of hard work.
Giovanni Fattori, born in 1825 in Livorno and died in Florence in 1908, was one of the most important Italian painters of the 19th century, a major exponent of the Macchiaiol movement. Parallel to French Impressionism, beginning in the second half of the 19th century, Macchiaiolism emerged as a reaction to academic painting, but used the technique of staining as its expressive medium. For this group of painters, vision is created by light as a collection of patches of color. Giovanni Fattori and the other Macchiaioli always focused on social themes, coinciding with the Verist movement in literature.
