Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this ink portrait, artist Giovanni March demonstrates his ability to achieve a perfectly naturalistic rendering, even with a highly graphic technique. The extremely synthetic drawing gives form to the figure in negative, delineating the space around her with a vibrant stroke, charged with existential vibrations. Finally, with a lively brushstroke, the artist creates a complex interplay of shading.
Giovanni March (Tunis, 1894 – Livorno, 1974). After his father's death, he moved from Tunis to Livorno. Self-taught, he received valuable advice from the painter Ludovico Tommasi. In the 1920s, he gained national recognition through a series of exhibitions. In 1920, he was among the founders of the Gruppo Labronico, whose group shows he regularly participated in over the following years. In 1922, he exhibited with Primo Conti at the Fiorentina Primaverile. In 1923, he exhibited at the Galleria La Vinciana in Milan. In 1927, he exhibited at the Galleria l'Esame in Milan, introduced by Carlo Carrà. In 1929, he exhibited at the Galerie L'Artistique in Nice and at the XXXV Salon of the Society of Fine Arts in Nice. In 1930, he exhibited at the Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris. In 1956, he participated in the Premio del Fiorino in Florence and in 1959 in the XIII Premio Michetti. In 1961 he won the Olbia National Painting Prize. In 1966 he participated in the IX Quadriennale in Rome. He is considered one of the most modern artists among the founders of the Labronico Group,
