Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," meaning to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images. The abstraction of painter Giovanni Nonnis, in his "Warriors" series, is fundamentally based on a post-Cubist reinterpretation of Sardinian traditions.
This work is a true example of the artist Giovanni Nonnis's oeuvre. In his research, the subject is subjected to a mechanical reconstruction that draws essentially on Cubism. The most interesting aspect is that, in his mechanomorphic figures, Nonnis manages to combine aspects of both Analytical Cubism (in the geometric decomposition of subjects within a complex space) and Synthetic Cubism (in the accentuated abstraction of figures, reduced to a set of lines and geometric shapes). Nonnis's post-Cubism echoes the art of Gino Meloni and Ennio Morlotti, as well as the fantastical geometries of Paul Klee. Indeed, his subjects, beyond their purely mechanical character, in their totemic appearance and consistently vibrant color palette, convey an archaic and primitive quality that makes this artist's works truly unique.
Giovanni Nonnis (Nuoro, 1929 – 1975). In the 1950s, he began an experimental journey that developed an archaic figuration with references to the Nuragic world. His artistic practice draws inspiration from the millennia-old roots of Barbagia and embodies a primitive dream world, composed of symbols that refer to the sense of the absolute and are translated into a myriad of details with a barbaric and ancestral flavour. Giovanni Nonnis absorbs the rocky landscape of the Nuoro area and combines it with the strong anti-classical aesthetic and cultural traditions of Barbagia. His pictorial style is almost indifferent to the final result but seems to connect to the union between chaos and the spirit of the place, between the absolute and primitive man's vision of the world: wind, sun, earth, rain, and archaic tradition.
