Description of the work
Description of the work
This collection of lithographs by Giovanni Omiccioli is fascinating both for their subject matter and for the artist's interpretation. Giovanni Omiccioli is an artist deeply rooted in reality and its perception. Although his renowned landscape work tends to adopt a minimalist and dreamlike interpretation, Omiccioli has a profound connection to sensory data, as demonstrated by the subjects chosen for this series of prints. The five pieces, in fact, offer glimpses of a candid and sincere reality, conveying an intense lyricism of everyday life. For this reason, the themes presented have the simplicity of more traditional subjects: reproductions of animals or plants and small still lifes.
Compared to his easel landscape paintings, in which Giovanni Omiccioli proposed a minimalist expressionism rooted in the "Roman School," these graphic works demonstrate a closer adherence to phenomenal reality. Thus, although his minimalism is confirmed by the use of essential expressive means (a simple incised line and impressionistic hatching), the descriptions of these fragments of reality are effective and vivid. In short, a distinct, original spirit emerges compared to the sparse Roman countryside so typical of this painter's landscapes. Furthermore, within the collection, we find a remarkable ability to modulate expressive means, from the most essential representations to the more descriptive and vibrant ones, characterized by light effects. The result is always a sincere and poetic realism.
Giovanni Omiccioli was a Roman artist born in 1901 and died in 1975. He joined the Roman School in 1928, associating with Mafai, Raphael, and Scipione. He was also active in politics, producing the first newspaper for Unità in 1945. That same year, he participated in the First Exhibition of Art Against Barbarism, promoted by the communist newspaper at the Galleria di Roma. Winner of the Marzotto Prize with "The Shepherd with the Goat," Omiccioli was present at major exhibitions, particularly notable for his invitation to a retrospective at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and a solo exhibition at the Galleria d'Arte La Medusa in Naples.
