Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Giovanni Valenzano's landscape painting can be defined as exquisitely expressionist, due to the way the artist, through the application of color, achieves a remarkable synthesis of the subject. The view, therefore, is subjected to an exercise in reducing sensory data in order to bring out the essence of the subject, with great expressive potential added by the artist's gestures. Indeed, Giovanni Valenzano's pictorial application is dense and full of textural color, composed of structural brushstrokes that, however, avoid harshness, constructing geometric volumes that fit together perfectly. The resulting rendering of the landscape has the captivating characteristics of a pure expressive force, free of idealization, with a treatment of the pictorial material decidedly vibrant with emotion. Even in his choice of colors, Giovanni Valenzano strives to maintain pure hues, tied to the land he depicts in his works.

Giovanni Valenzano was born in Bari. He has participated in national and international exhibitions. He has exhibited in Italy and abroad, particularly in America, France, and Switzerland. He has served on state commissions for the revaluation of art and has given numerous conferences on the subject. He was Secretary of the Association of Artists and Professionals. He directed the art gallery "La Soffitta" in Bari. For his artistic work, he was awarded the gold medal in Rome.
