The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern Ages, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In the case of this work, Gisella Macaro prefers to draw inspiration from the simple and immediate everyday life of a lively city scene.

In this work dedicated to Trastevere, Gisella Macaro draws on a hyperrealist aesthetic, yet interprets it with a popular and imaginative edge. Her glimpse of Rome conveys the authenticity of a working-class city through the scenic creation of a perfect backdrop, rendered with a miniature technique. Above all, the execution is grounded in a hyperrealistic language. The use of a multi-material technique transports the representation into the third dimension, engaging the viewer in the creation of a perfectly concrete and vibrant urban backdrop.
