Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
This sculpture is particularly interesting for appreciating artist Giuliano Gemma's study of the human figure. For Gemma, the basis remains the reality of a concrete and tangible representation, immediately relatable to the subject. But the artist, at the same time, feels the need to go beyond mere phenomenal reality and integrate it with his own subjectivity. For this reason, the figure undergoes unnatural deformations, which nevertheless play a fundamental role in its expressiveness. In this case, dynamism is achieved through an elongated form that transcends all natural laws and must be interpreted entirely from an aesthetic perspective. Gemma's characteristic style is to sketch out forms in a summary and concise manner, lending an iconic character to the work.
Giuliano Gemma, born in Rome in 1938 and passed away in Civitavecchia in 2013, is best known as an actor, but he also had a significant artistic career. Passionate about sculpture from a young age, he devoted himself to it during breaks from his acting career. He favored bronze sculpture, through which he created a significant body of figurative works. His research focused on the human figure, starting from a classical conception, but recontextualizing it according to his own original and personal expressiveness.
