Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Giuliano Ottaviani's paintings feature a series of episodes from everyday life, solitary women depicted in a wide variety of situations, but all of this takes on a unique character, somewhere between surrealism and metaphysics, thanks to this artist's highly original research.
In Giuliano Ottaviani's paintings, the reality of simple, banal everyday situations is transfigured into the symbolic significance of a dimension somewhere between surrealism and metaphysics. Indeed, the settings of his genre scenes are imaginary and mysterious landscapes, made up of buildings with fanciful architecture, enigmatic sculptures, and impossible natural conformations. The human figure appears at the center of this "other" dimension, immersed in a timeless situation. A constant element is the light emanating from an unreal sun, which imbues the entire space of the work with a dense atmosphere and fiery hues. Formally, Giuliano Ottaviani constructs his imaginary world with references to Cubist aesthetics. His constructions are geometric solids inserted into a complex, non-uniform space. Even the human figure is subject to the same process of mechanization.
Giuliano Ottaviani was born in Foligno in 1954. He first attended the Perugia School of Art and later graduated from the Brera Academy under Domenico Purificato. His first exhibition was held at the age of 17 in Milan, but he subsequently achieved great success in Zurich, where the gallery owner Her Bolag purchased his works for his private collection. Ottaviani divides his time between Italy and Switzerland, where he has consistently garnered excellent critical and public acclaim.
