Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus performer, or mask began to gain popularity, as it played a key role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown.
Giuliano Trombini's pictorial production has a distinctly Symbolist flavor, even in its chosen subject (the mask), which expresses enigma and an unmistakable, mysterious melancholy. Formally, the character's symbolic aura is enhanced through a synthetic representation, achieved through a brushstroke that empties volumes and eliminates facial details. In this way, the subject takes on an iconic character, and the work can break away from a simple, contingent representation to take on broader, more hidden meanings. Chromatically, the neutral tones of the Venetian view prevail, against which the mask's orange robe stands out.
Giuliano Trombini, originally from the province of Ferrara, began his artistic career as a poster and advertising designer, while also devoting himself to painting. He held his first exhibition in 1970 and participated in numerous impromptu exhibitions, receiving recognition and awards. A pleasant legacy of these years are several works in which he captures the social life of an era in the painting "Bar Settimo." He created several murals in Florence and Naples, and illustrated book covers, novels, and fanzines. From the mid-1970s, he devoted himself exclusively to painting. His artistic work has always been well received both in Italy and abroad. He has been invited to participate in important national and international group exhibitions, and has held numerous solo exhibitions in leading Italian galleries.
