Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work highlights Giulio Falzoni's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, diluted and made of transparent glazes, intervenes. Despite the essentiality of the representation, it breaks down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, flattened in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter using broad, blotchy brushstrokes, full of color. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended using a unifying palette, in a balance founded on the correspondences of tones.
Giulio Falzoni was born in Marmirolo in 1900 and died in Milan in 1979. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, specializing in watercolor. His first solo exhibition was held in Mantua in 1939, followed by Florence, Padua, Prato, Naples, Venice, and Milan. In 1947, he participated in the Mostra d'Arte Mantovana at the Palazzo della Ragione in Mantua during the Mantua Art Fair. His exhibitions have been held in the United States, England, France, and . Numerous collections house his paintings, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Capitoline Museums.
