Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject presented by painter Giulio Falzoni encompasses a theme that has been part of art history for centuries. Historically and culturally, the symbol of the horse is often associated with energy and movement, as well as symbolizing power and authority. In the contemporary era, numerous artists have attempted to depict this animal, such as Marino Martini, who explored the emotional and physical dimensions of the horse through sculptures and drawings that capture the beauty of its form and harmony; Franz Marc, who uses the horse to explore themes of psychology and spirituality; and, more recently, Anselm Kiefer, who uses the animal to explore complex themes of historical and mythological memory. Overall, art history finds a connection with the horse, as has happened with artist Giulio Falzoni, who uses lithography to create a gentle representation.
Stylistically, lithography, a limited-edition graphic art, is based on a matrix that allows for multiple reproductions of the same subject. There are various types of graphic art, including woodcut, aquatint, etching, silkscreen, and many others. All these techniques are not simple prints, but graphic art created through the direct intervention of the artist's hand. The word lithography derives from the Greek and literally means "writing on stone." The technique exploits the mutual repulsion between aqueous and greasy materials. The artist, on a specially prepared, thick stone, begins to trace a design with a greasy pen. This design must mirror the intended subject. As the ink is drawn over the stone, the watery parts of the stone from the initial treatment repel the ink, which settles only on the design. When pressed, the paper therefore absorbs only the ink previously deposited on the design. This artistic device gives Giulio Falzoni's graphics a beautiful design that denotes the artist's technical and drawing skills, with a cursive and very fast stroke.
Born in Marmirolo in 1900, Giulio Falzoni was an Italian painter, a leading representative of the Italian figurative school. He trained in Florence in 1928, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in watercolor. In 1939, he held his first solo exhibition in Mantua, followed by Florence, Padua, Prato, Naples, Venice, and Milan. In the late 1940s, he specialized at the Royal Watercolor Society in London, a city of which he left us evocative views. In 1947, he participated in the Mostra d'Arte Mantovana at the Palazzo della Ragione in Mantua during the Mantua Art Fair. His exhibitions have been held in the United States, England, and France. Numerous collections house his paintings, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Capitoline Museums.
