Description of the work
Description of the work
As the title, written by the artist on the back of the canvas, reveals, the work depicts "Old Milan." In the dark, foggy atmosphere, we can glimpse the outline of the Duomo, while in the foreground, the life of the city's residents continues on their streets. The painter transports us to another era, where oil lamps and horse-drawn carriages still exist, inspiring in the viewer a nostalgia for a simpler life.
Falzoni is best known as a watercolorist, but in this work he enchants us with oil, while remaining faithful to his signature style. In his art, reality becomes a pictorial vibration with poetic overtones, the fruit of an exercise in pure perception on the part of the artist. Formally, this unfolds by maximizing the expressive potential of diluted paint. Giulio Falzoni's refined sensibility manifests itself in recording the effect of light on objects, yet this exercise is carried out with a strong poetic sense that shapes the representation of sensory data. Thus, light almost dissolves objects, transferring them into the timeless dimension of memory.
Born in Marmirolo Born in 1900, Giulio Falzoni was an Italian painter, a leading representative of the Italian figurative school. He trained in Florence in 1928, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in watercolor. In 1939, he held his first solo exhibition in Mantua, followed by Florence, Padua, Prato, Naples, Venice, and Milan. In the late 1940s, he specialized at the Royal Watercolor Society in London, a city of which he left us evocative views. In 1947, he participated in the Mostra d'Arte Mantovana at the Palazzo della Ragione in Mantua during the Mantua Art Fair. His exhibitions have been held in the United States, England, and France. His paintings are held in numerous collections, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Capitoline Museums.
