Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This work is a prime example of Giulio Picelli's distinctive artistic language. This painter developed a style of representation, particularly of the female human figure, grounded in an expressionism that renders his subjects phantasmagorical and surreal. Through the application of color, Picelli achieves a synthesis that dematerializes the figures, constructing them with light, semi-transparent layers of paint. The sensitive, physiognomic aspect gives way to emaciated, diaphanous faces with a powerful expressionist impact. The faces are hollow, while large, sunken eyes scrutinize the viewer. The female figures are draped in ostentatious bourgeois clothing, almost hidden by wide-brimmed hats and fur collars, rendered with a very cursory application. The quality of the palette is extraordinary, based on a shifting palette of acid and fluorescent hues that reaffirm the surreal nature of Picelli's pictorial style.
Giulio Picelli was born on January 31, 1934, in Padua. As a painter, he is known for his highly original expressionist and surrealist work. As a printmaker, he has produced several works using etching, aquatint, and drypoint techniques. He currently lives and works in Milan.
