Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. This work is a prime example of Giulio Picelli's distinctive artistic language. This painter developed a style of representation, particularly of the female human figure, grounded in an expressionism that renders his subjects phantasmagorical and surreal. Through the application of color, Picelli achieves a synthesis that dematerializes the figures, constructing them with light, semi-transparent layers of paint. The sensitive, physiognomic aspect gives way to emaciated, diaphanous faces with a powerful expressionist impact. The faces are hollow, while large, sunken eyes scrutinize the viewer. The female figures are draped in ostentatious bourgeois clothing, almost hidden by wide-brimmed hats and fur collars, rendered with a very cursory application. The quality of the palette is extraordinary, based on a shifting palette of acid and fluorescent hues that reaffirm the surreal nature of Picelli's pictorial style.

Giulio Picelli was born on January 31, 1934, in Padua. As a painter, he is known for his highly original expressionist and surrealist work. As a printmaker, he has produced several works using etching, aquatint, and drypoint techniques. He currently lives and works in Milan.
