Description of the work
Description of the work
This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio de Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. However, it creates an effect of alienation through the process of displacement, that is, the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context, or through condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images.
In this work by the painter Giuseppe Banfi, the reference to Metaphysical Art is explicitly made through the figure of the mannequin. Formally, however, the canvas differs significantly from Giorgio de Chirico's example. The sense of suspension and enigmatic anticipation remains, but Banfi achieves it through a naïve simplification, rather than the traditional illusory metaphysical objectivity. An expressionistic simplification that involves both drawing and color, in a desire to reclaim primordial values.
Giuseppe Banfi is an extremely eclectic painter. His personality is always open to experimenting with new languages and styles. Banfi's paintings range from abstract, both biomorphic and mechanomorphic, to figurative, including portraits and genre scenes.
