Description of the work
Description of the work
Mario De Biasi (Belluno, 2 June 1923 – Milan, 27 May 2013) was an Italian photographer.
A versatile photographer, after spending his youth in Sois, a few kilometers from Belluno, he moved to Milan. He began his career as a photojournalist with the magazine Epoca in 1953, a career that lasted until the 1980s. During this thirty-year period, he produced reportages from various countries. Among these are the 1956 Hungarian uprising, images of New York in the 1950s, and portraits such as those of Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren.
He exhibited in the exhibition “The Italian Metamorphosis, 1943-1968” and one of his works was used as the official poster of the event. In 1994, his photo Gli italiani si voltano (in which a young Moira Orfei is portrayed from behind) was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
De Biasi's work focuses primarily on cinema, architecture, and nature, and he has held exhibitions and workshops over the years. He has published several books and received awards and recognition (including the Saint Vincent Prize for Journalism in 1982 and, in 2003, the title of Master of Italian Photography, the highest honor from the Italian Federation of Photographic Associations (which dedicated a monograph to him that same year). On December 7, 2006, at the recommendation of the Councilor for Culture, Vittorio Sgarbi, the City of Milan awarded him its highest honor, the Ambrogino d'oro.
In 2007 these images were exhibited and Forma – International Center of Photography in Milan – gave birth to the exhibition Tales of Water and Life – Photographs by Mario De Biasi from 1948 to Today.
He died on May 27, 2013, at the age of 89, in the Milan clinic where he had been treated for some time. A few weeks earlier, at the 2013 Milan Photoshow, he had been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his ability to chronicle major events, but also for the sensitivity and gentleness with which he always approached the small realities he encountered along the way.
