Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Giuseppe Castellazzi drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes.
Giuseppe Castellazzi's works demonstrate the artist's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the tangible details of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, and, despite the essentiality of the representation, they break down the space into different planes, capturing the vibrations of light and life on the subject.
Giuseppe Castellazzi (Cassano d'Adda 1909 – Lurago d'Erba 1998) was a painter who produced an interesting body of landscapes and genre scenes, executed with a remarkable technique based on patchy application of color and a composition of broad brushstrokes inspired by post-Impressionism.
