In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso.

Giuseppe Colonnello was a painter originally from Udine, born in 1903 and died in 1977. An artist with an excellent academic education, he lived for several years in Naples, where he acquired an extraordinary technique for achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering of his subjects.
