Description of the work
Description of the work
Giuseppe D'Amico's etchings are rooted in the Vedutismo tradition. Vedutismo originated in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo artists aimed to depict a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are essentially two types of vedute: the realistic, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter. Vedutismo is a genre that continues to enjoy popularity in art, revisited by artists in new forms and with new interpretations. Giuseppe D'Amico's favorite subjects in his works are urban views that emphasize the architectural element or picturesque countryside views.
Giuseppe D'Amico's engravings always fully uphold their high illustrative and didactic commitment to capturing the view in every minute detail. The technique is extraordinary, in its rigorous perspective approach, capturing every architectural or naturalistic detail with miniature refinement. Also crucial is the direction of light, which cuts through the space in evocative contrasts. The true peculiarity of these engravings is that, upon closer inspection, we discover that the perfection of the objects depicted is actually constructed by dense hatching, making them come alive and vibrant.
Giuseppe Mario D'Amico was a 20th-century painter and printmaker. D'Amico displayed an excellent technique for interpreting urban or landscape views in a classical and traditional manner.
