Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
In this work, too, we can see how Giuseppe Manfredi's vision transcends the phenomenon. Indeed, the representation of motherhood is conducted through an exaltation of plastic values constructed along multiple directional lines, according to a non-univocal perspective. In this way, the structures are explored more deeply, breaking them down within the complex space created by the artist. Manfredi's investigative process continues through the pictorial layering, emphasizing the volumes and highlighting the object's relationship with the space it interacts with. Furthermore, Manfredi employs an elaborate pictorial style that imbues the objects with existential vibrations.
Giuseppe Manfredi was born in Serravezza di Lucca in 1934 and passed away in Montecatini in 1987. His painting focused primarily on still life, of which he created a large number of versions. His style draws inspiration from Giorgio Morandi for the same exploration of the essence of things, through the action of light.
