Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this particular work, which, as the subtitle suggests, is intended as a tribute to Michele Cascella, Giuseppe Marchese creates a landscape where flowers and their colors are the protagonists, just like the typical subjects of the Abruzzo master. This type of floral view allows the artist to unleash his full chromatic flair in a composition in which an Impressionist stylistic register is taken to its extreme.
The entire composition of the work is aligned with the goal of reinterpreting and exalting Michele Cascella's pictorial style. The entire landscape structure is determined by an extremely complex, almost pointillist, hatching technique that gives shape to things, creates volumes, measures space, and, of course, records every minute perception of light and color. The result is a depiction that, in addition to demonstrating great mastery of the pictorial layering, captures the vibrations of light on objects and their interaction with the atmosphere. The painting's surface thus resolves into a whimsical polychrome harmony, just like the Abruzzo painter. However, the inspiration from Michele Cascella does not prevent Giuseppe Marchese from expressing his own pictorial conception. Compared to his model, the Palermo-born artist is characterized by a denser, more mellow touch in the depiction of the floral blanket, and even a more compact brushstroke in delineating the sky and sea.
Giuseppe Marchese was born in 1938 in Palermo and passed away in 2010. At the age of twelve, he participated in his first group exhibition and developed his artistic skills by associating with painters Guadagno, Manzella, Mirabella, and Giambecchina. He also encountered Annigoni, Fiume, Guttuso, and especially Migneco, whose influence led him to study new forms of expressionism. Throughout his career, he experimented with a wide variety of techniques, from oil painting to acrylics, from watercolor to mixed media, from murals to engraving. Giuseppe Marchese exhibited his work in important national and international exhibitions. He also curated the iconography of several books and designed sets for the Teatro Biondo in Palermo and the Teatro di Catania. His artistic career was marked by a shift from an expressionist artistic language, inspired by a Fauvist line of aggressive colors, to a figurative plasticism in which the human figure is the protagonist.
