Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. The subjects chosen by Giuseppe Migneco for his portraits are always drawn from the rural world. The artist's aim is to enhance their popular character and their connection to the land through his expressionist style.
Giuseppe Migneco's style, in line with the artistic program developed by the "Corrente" group, is inspired by an expressionist language. Migneco's synthesis is achieved through a very thick line that outlines the figures and gives them a dramatic physiognomy. The characters in his works are therefore men or women of working-class backgrounds with very pronounced facial features. The color has a very material, almost earthy consistency, which suggests a closeness, not only formal but also spiritual, to Van Gogh. The extreme simplification of design, form, and space represents, on the part of this painter, a conscious choice to bring the representation of reality back to primary values of authenticity, such as those linked to the land and the rural world.
Giuseppe Migneco, born in Messina in 1903, died in Milan in 1997. In 1937, he was among the founders of the artistic group "Corrente," which brought together several artists united by the common goal of rejecting fascist conformism and opening up to European horizons. The aim was to propose an art with human, moral, and civil content. The entire group oriented itself toward a predominantly expressionist style.
