Description of the work
Description of the work
The canvas we are observing belongs to a figurative context, yet it is nourished by a touch of metaphysical aesthetics. As can be seen within the work, the composition unfolds across three levels. The upper level features a sky, or sea, with delicate shades of gray. The lower level is composed of a green plain, while in the foreground stands a composition of disjointed wooden objects, likely a boat. The sense of alienation that emerges from the canvas is decidedly provocative and illusory. Giuseppe Montalbano creates a style of painting that transcends metaphysical art and hyperrealism, seeking a fluid brushstroke that aims to represent reality: the artist's intention is to reproduce the depicted object, accentuating its pictorial aspect. Drawing, in this case, is of lesser importance. The color scheme depicts the landscape, with varying shades of green, even including the use of blue and purple to create the shadow at the foot of the tree in the foreground. The excellent spatial balance achieved is not accentuated by the lighting. The overall effect appears flat and lacking in depth, but the master's expert and decidedly deliberate hand creates a pleasing and emotionally impactful painting. Giuseppe Montalbano, born in 1940, the youngest of seven children, was born in Tripoli, Libya, where his family had moved for work, but repatriated to Italy, to Sciacca, when he was just two years old. He graduated from the Art Institute of Palermo. He was one of the most prominent artists in Sciacca, and passed away in 2013. His career was marked by an incredible number of exhibitions not only in Italy but also abroad, from Arezzo to Reggio Calabria, from Venice to Varese, from Sanremo to Milan, passing through Piacenza, Bologna, and many other Italian cities. Abroad, he exhibited his works in Madrid, Bilbao, and Barcelona, in Spain, in Montevideo, Uruguay, Menton, and France. And then, his homeland. Numerous exhibitions were held in Palermo, Catania, various municipalities in the province of Agrigento, and especially in Sciacca.
