Giuseppe Nicotra - The Pond in the Woods

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Giuseppe Nicotra's artistic production is entirely focused on landscape, a theme he develops, depending on his inspiration, between naturalistic rendering and impressionistic influences.

Compared to much of Giuseppe Nicotra's work, this work is particularly interesting because, rather than an academic, naturalistic rendering, he here opts for a more immediate and impressionistic execution. The artist uses rapid, hatched brushstrokes to quickly delineate shapes and volumes. This allows him to capture, with every single brushstroke, the effects of light and atmosphere on objects, and to instantly convey a wooded landscape with precise weather and environmental conditions to the canvas. The entire color palette, from the reflections on the lake to the foliage of the trees, is designed to reflect the precise atmospheric conditions intended to be represented in a perfect conception of plein air painting. As with the Impressionists, the perspective grid is not eliminated, but spatial depth is determined exclusively through the modulations of color. The final result is a pronounced and brilliant polychromy that imbues the landscape with profound lyricism.

Giuseppe Nicotra is a painter from Piacenza, born in 1950. He graduated from the Brera Academy and then completed his studies at the School of Art in Florence. His first solo exhibition was held in 1968 at the L'Angolo gallery in Rome. Since then, numerous exhibitions have followed in cities such as Genoa, Varese, Milan, Turin, Paris, Montreal, London, Madrid, Malaga, Zaragoza, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, and Geneva.
