Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Giuseppe Rizzo's works are entirely constructed through color. Using a remarkable Impressionist technique, Rizzo's color delineates forms with just a few brushstrokes, creating views brimming with vivacity and freshness. However, as we can see in this painting, which features a fairly recurring theme in this artist's work (with the mountainside in the background and the figures busy at work in the foreground), Rizzo's ability to synthesize goes even beyond Impressionism, reaching a level of abstraction, determined precisely by his cursive brushstroke, that borders on Expressionism. The brushwork, at times dense and textured, also introduces a certain gestural element.

Giuseppe Rizzo is an artist strongly influenced by Impressionism; much of his work consists of views or landscapes that are strongly inspired by that pictorial style, but recontextualized in a contemporary sensibility that introduces strong expressionist notes.
