Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Painter Giuseppe Scognamiglio's interpretation of still life and floral compositions is resolved through a pictorial style balanced between realism and an impressionistic rendering of the subject. Thus, the pronounced post-impressionistic synthesis that dominates his landscapes is tempered, favoring a more decisive adherence to life painting and a more precise rendering of the subjects' plastic qualities. Indeed, in these genres of painting, Scognamiglio remains faithful to the tangible material before his eyes, presenting it as it is, in its pure essentiality. However, the power of this raw and genuine representation is fueled by the artist's predominantly impressionistic style, which allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the panel, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on the objects, but without interfering with the precise depiction of reality. In particular, these “May Flowers” have light coming delicately from our right, illuminating the white petals, the leaves and the surface of the vase with golden reflections.
Giuseppe Scognamiglio was born in Portici in March 1901 and died in Naples in 1985. He began painting at a very young age, following in the footsteps of the last exponents of the Resina School, also known as the Republic of Portici, founded in 1863. He quickly became one of the most prominent exponents of Neapolitan Impressionism of the early twentieth century: together with Crisconio, Striccoli, Casciaro, and Tamburrini, he was the protagonist of a pictorial poetics among the most important in the Neapolitan movement that developed from the 1920s onwards. A skilled portraitist, he painted primarily landscapes and still lifes from life.
