Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this painting falls within the genre scene category, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Giuseppe's artistic output also features many genre scenes inspired by popular characters.
Among the various stylistic registers adopted by Giuseppe Succi is a series of works in which the artist seeks to represent reality transfigured into the fleeting dimension of time and memory. As a result, objects almost lose their physical consistency, and the perceptible element is reduced to a few synthetic traces. Everything, both the subjects and the space, is composed of an ethereal and elusive substance, without a true form on a two-dimensional surface. The subjects are constructed from an uncertain outline and a few flickering brush strokes. Within, the very substance of the objects blends with the landscape in the background, becoming one with the space. The latter, in turn, is achieved through light brushstrokes, almost transparent in the fleeting essence of reality transfigured into memory. Even the chromatic palette, based on a palette of grays, expresses a sense of insubstantiality and ineffability.
Giuseppe Succi was born in Bagnacavallo in 1914. His artistic output encompasses still lifes, floral compositions, magical landscapes, and the recurring subject of Pulcinellas performing circus acts. In all cases, his art is imbued with a subtle magic that shifts representation to the realm of unreality.
