Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. More generally, many artists dedicated their work to depicting the life of the circus or that of street performers and acrobats. These subjects fall within the broader genre scene, but are characterized by a particular narrative and descriptive verve, often tinged with poetic, if not surreal, tones. The artist Giuseppe Succi often created works dedicated to a fanciful world of Pulcinella performing circus acts in a magical atmosphere imbued with a subtle melancholy.

As we can see in this work, Giuseppe Succi's paintings of Pulcinella are characterized by a type of representation that transcends reality to take on decidedly narrative and symbolic connotations. In this case, just like in an elegant illustration, the characters are lined up in a variety of imaginative poses. Giuseppe Succi's creativity is expressed, even in a rather simple scene, through the diversity of types and characters, expressed in a language with charmingly caricatural and fairy-tale tones. Formally, the work is executed with a simple line that nevertheless delineates the subjects with very concrete, rounded forms.
Giuseppe Succi was born in Bagnacavallo in 1914. His artistic output spans still lifes, floral compositions, and the recurring subject of Pulcinellas performing circus acts. In both cases, his art is imbued with a subtle magic that shifts representation to the realm of unreality.
