Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. As with all the subjects explored in his creative output, landscape, in Giuseppe Succi's work, is cloaked in a fantastical and subtly unreal guise.
The work is a perfect example of Giuseppe Succi's landscape production. The view presents only elements inferred from tangible reality without descending into a surreal dimension. However, it is the way the composition is conceived that suggests a certain magical and symbolic atmosphere. Giuseppe Succi's landscape is extremely minimal, starting from the composition: the artist chooses a very distant framing through which he creates a dilated space in which things appear very small. Despite this, this space appears devoid of depth; rather, everything is characterized by an immaterial two-dimensionality. It is the very nature of Giuseppe Succi's pictorial layering that fuels this effect. Indeed, his is like a sulfurous mixture of iridescent hues that gives things an ephemeral, vaporous consistency.
Giuseppe Succi was born in Bagnacavallo in 1914. His artistic output encompasses still lifes, floral compositions, magical landscapes, and the recurring subject of Pulcinellas performing circus acts. In all cases, his art is imbued with a subtle magic that shifts representation to the realm of unreality.
