Description of the work
Description of the work
This type of subject can be classified within the metaphysical aesthetic. The artistic movement founded by Giorgio De Chirico is based on the reuse of pre-existing images, familiar in the collective imagination, but produces an effect of alienation through the process of displacement (the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context) or condensation (the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity). Metaphysical art is also distinguished by the ostentatiously illusory nature of its images. Specifically, in this work, artist Giuseppe Torre draws inspiration from August Rodin's famous sculpture "The Thinker," reworking it with a metaphysical and rationalist twist.
Artist Giuseppe Torre is the creator of a body of work inspired by De Chirico's Metaphysical Art and the work of Marc Kostabi. In the Greek master's work, mannequins, which were still objects embodying enigmatic and mysterious apparitions, come to life, populating a world that belongs only to them. The difference from De Chirico is also evident on a formal level, as Torre, like Kostabi, opts for a more plastic hyperrealism, unlike that of traditional metaphysical art. The material that generates Torre's mannequins is petrified, more lucid, and illuminated by a full light that makes them emit opalescent shimmers. In this work, moreover, the artist creates a more surreal setting, in a space contextualized only by the symbolism of numbers and a geometric rationalism.
Giuseppe Torre is an artist originally from San Giorgio a Cremano, where he was born in 1956. Initially studying technical subjects, he abandoned this field to devote himself to photography and his great passion, painting. Self-taught, he experimented with various styles and trends, finally arriving at hyperrealism, metaphysical art, and sacred art. For years, he has participated in group and solo exhibitions, both regional and national, with considerable public and critical acclaim. His works are exhibited at the E. Greco Museum in Sabaudia (LT), at the Regina dei Gigli convent complex in San Giorgio a Cremano (NA), at the art gallery of the Basilica of Sant'Alfonso in Pagani (SA), at the Episcopal House of Kaahma Tanzania, and in numerous private collections.
