Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Giuseppe Viola's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make room for the force of the brushstrokes. Indeed, the vigor with which Giuseppe Viola creates his works is such that it borders on the gesturality typical of Abstract Expressionism. However, Giuseppe Viola holds firmly to phenomenal reality because even with his colorful, highly textured brushstrokes, he manages to delineate a house, a tree, a subject, creating a landscape of immense expressive force. Color adapts to this context, with its aggressive hues and the violent contrasts sought by the painter, going far beyond naturalism and acquiring a highly symbolic, evocative, and spiritual value.

Giuseppe Viola was a Milanese painter born in 1933 and died in 2010. He was the founder of Pictorial Imagism, an artistic language that aimed to translate Ezra Pound's poetic Imagism into images. Pictorial Imagism officially began in 1969, with a manifesto co-signed with the writer and painter Dino Buzzati. Giuseppe Viola's works have been exhibited in numerous shows both in Italy and abroad and appear in various public (Museum of Modern Art, Vatican City; Museum of Contemporary Art – Kiasma, Helsinki; Pinacoteca dell'Accademia di Zalantea, Acireale; Museum of Italian Art – Durazzo) and private collections.
