Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.
The works of painter Giusi Boncinelli are distinguished by a decidedly expressionist approach. The artist begins by recording sensory data, leaving a clear trace in the work. However, the subject is completely transfigured by Giusi Boncinelli's pictorial layering. Color is used in an almost gestural manner, conveying the artist's emotions onto the figure itself. The figure is thus synthesized in a powerfully expressive manner, structured by a dense, material, almost pointillist painting style, which envelops it in a dynamic, iridescent impasto. Indeed, the most striking characteristic of this artist's work is the pronounced polychromy that characterizes her compositions.
Painter Giusi Boncinelli was born in 1934. Her artistic output is distinguished by an in-depth exploration of the female figure. Her work can be described as a color expressionism, through which she synthesizes figures in a gestural, pictorial style.
