Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. The artist Glauco Tarquini's work frequently features works characterized by highly complex iconography. The theme of the horse, one of this painter's favorite subjects, is particularly prominent.
This work is part of a series in which Glauco Tarquini pursues a classically oriented approach, drawing inspiration from De Chirico's subjects. The subject is treated synthetically, highlighting features that are not physiognomic but generalized in a representation with symbolic meanings. The forms are traced with a simple stroke, and the space is decontextualized. The artist begins with phenomenal reality, but distances himself for a deeper, metaphysical analysis. From this perspective, his use of color is also consistent: Glauco Tarquini's typical palette is composed of pure and objective hues, in keeping with the symbolic nature of his painting.
Glauco Tarquini, born in L'Aquila in 1922 and died in Rome in 2010, was a painter and illustrator active in central Italy. He was the son of Sabatino Tarquini, a painter and sculptor from Prata d'Ansidonia in Abruzzo whose works have a classical and figurative style. He was the brother of Paolo and Luigi, who worked in Rome primarily as poster artists for several film distribution companies, projects in which Glauco also participated.
