Description of the work
Description of the work
The work, as stated by the title, is inspired by Amedeo Modigliani, the Livorno-born artist born in 1884 and died in Paris in 1924. Known primarily as a painter, Modigliani also produced a remarkable body of sculpture, from which this work by Goeyens draws its aesthetic inspiration.
The work celebrates the distinctive characteristics of the Livorno-born artist's sculpture. Modigliani was well aware, in his own language, of Expressionism (from which he borrowed the process of synthesizing the subject) and Cubism (for the ability to deconstruct the subject through the use of multiple viewpoints). Modigliani takes up these influences and uses them, in sculpture, to create powerfully symbolic images, with a great, archaic expressive power. Thus, the representation becomes almost an idol from an ancient civilization, with a strong influence from primitive African sculpture.
Martine Goyens is a Belgian artist born in 1953 and living in Italy. She has already had a busy career, participating in various international events (exhibitions at the European Commission in Brussels, the 2010 American Cup in Valencia, The World of Accordion and the ORC World Sailing Championship in Castelfidardo and Ancona).
