Description of the work
Description of the work
In GPA's artistic production the puzzle is the absolute protagonist,
A constitutive element of all his works. The pieces, pictorially reproduced in a hyper-objective manner, are used in diverse and ever-new compositional combinations. This allows the artist, in each work, to pursue different aesthetic explorations, developing his own language in ever-original directions. Fundamentally, however, GPA's basic style can be defined as a cross between New Dada and Pop Art, in which the puzzle object is used to recontextualize even images of media society into a vision of reality that corresponds to a playful interlocking of pieces.
In this work, GPA superimposes the image of the thinking chimpanzee onto the jigsaw puzzle, the central element of his work. Formally, the entire piece is executed with impeccable hyperrealistic technique, creating a truly striking aesthetic impact. The compositional idea is to propose an exquisitely pop image, elevating it to a pictorial icon. Meanwhile, in the background, the puzzle piece appears decidedly elaborate, with a pictorial layer that also harks back to models of American Abstract Expressionism.
Gian Pietro Arzuffi, aka GPA, was born in Garbagnate Milanese in 1979 and lives and works in Cesate. He graduated from the School of Surveying in 1998. Fascinated by the world of art since childhood, he approached it as a self-taught artist, observing and learning from painters and sculptors he met over the years, belonging to various artistic movements. He began experimenting with his own painting and collage techniques, eventually developing his own concept of art.
