Description of the work
Description of the work
The work was created by Gregorio Sgarra, a painter from Corato who specializes in reviving ancient icons. In this case, the artist recovered an ancient panel, covered it with gilding, and created the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel. In this way, the restoration of an ancient artifact is re-evaluated through a philological process in which the panel's own deterioration creates an antique patina that, in turn, enhances Sgarra's work. The panel, in fact, exhibits considerable warping due to the natural process of humidity on the wood. The artist, in turn, contributed to maintaining this antique character by leaving various scratches and gaps in the gilding he applied. The philological process continues in the execution of the figure of the archangel, whose elongated proportions, besides perfectly adapting to the panel compositionally, are a clear reference to the tradition of Byzantine icons. However, the Saint Michael painted by Sgarra, with his aristocratic and haughty demeanor, also shows a strong connection with the late Gothic painting of the 14th and 15th centuries.
