Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
In Guglielmo Ferraiola's compositions, we can appreciate a type of informal language in which matter dominates. A matter possessing its own ordering will, to which even the artist's gesture is subordinate. He allows the matter the freedom to express itself on the support in the marks left by its own existence. This freedom is also reaffirmed by the color, whose monochrome application enhances the material's plasticity.
Guglielmo Ferraiola lives and works in Anzio. He trained in set design, particularly in the 1970s when he supported the project for a traveling tent theater. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, receiving various awards, such as first prize at the 2003 Nice Art Expo and the Bronze Medal at the Société Nationale des Beaux. His works are exhibited not only in Italy, but also in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Tunisia, Finland, and Denmark.
