Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation only starting in the 19th century. This type of subject coherently reflects the inclinations of the painter Guglielmo D'Este, whose artistic career is closely linked to the post-Impressionist movements. Indeed, urban landscapes and scenes of city life are typical themes of that pictorial climate. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the modern aspects represented by the urban landscape: the frenzy of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and the typically bourgeois settings. In Guglielmo D'Este's work, however, the more candid and popular dimension of urban reality prevails.
The artist Guglielmo D'Este's style is highly recognizable: his main characteristic is the resolution of figurative representations in a stylistic register with strong expressionist overtones. Indeed, we can appreciate how the scene is depicted by exploiting the expressive potential of color. The drawn structure dissolves into a highly synthetic representation. The painted surface transforms into a shifting impasto of dynamic chromaticism made up of bright, luminous hues. The brushstrokes are extremely rapid, aimed at immediacy in recording every single fragment of shifting reality on the canvas. For this reason, Guglielmo D'Este's brushstrokes are extremely diluted, very broad, and made of transparent glazes that, while conveying sensory information with immediacy, also ensure a highly lyrical interpretation.
Rino Guglielmo was a painter originally from Este, born in 1910 and died in 1994. He trained in Venice, first at the Art Institute, then at the Libera Scuola del Nudo at the Academy. He was a student of Virgilio Guidi. His artistic output included large frescoes and portraits. He decorated numerous churches; among others, he created the altarpiece above the altar of the chapel adjacent to the Chioggia cemetery, dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. He was also an illustrator, creating numerous plates for the Gazzettino Illustrato.
