Guido Guidi - Basket with Fruit

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

Guido Guidi's style also stems from the premises of the Livorno School, a painting style inspired by post-impressionism and Macchiaiolism. However, Guido Guidi transcends these premises, adopting a more daring approach to pictorial language. His brushwork is based on a patchwork technique, but he applies it with sparse touches that simplify forms and reduce space to a two-dimensional surface. In this way, Guidi leaves the realm of phenomenal reality, venturing into the realm of expressionist synthesis. This expressionism is made of broad strokes of color that synthesize subjects with just a few brushstrokes. Even color is subjected to anti-naturalistic strains, aimed instead at delineating emotional and spiritual situations.

Guido Guidi was a painter from Livorno, born in 1901 and died in 1998. He was one of the most important exponents of the Gruppo Labronico. He participated in the group's most important exhibitions: in 1961 in Florence at the Galleria Cancelli, in 1963 in Rome at the Galleria Antares with a solo show presented by Sante Monachesi, in 1965 in Grosseto, Lucca, and the Palazzo dei Priori in Volterra. Guido Guidi's entire life was marked by the loss of his son Luciano in 1928, a condition that led to frequent bouts of depression. In 1966, Guido Guidi achieved definitive recognition with a retrospective exhibition at the Casa della Cultura in Livorno.
