Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In the work of the artist Guido Basso, a composition consisting of clusters of small houses with a decidedly rustic feel is a recurring theme.
The work features a compositional model typical of Guido Basso. The scene is set diagonally, allowing the series of houses to reveal their volumes. The composition, therefore, resolves itself as an intersecting of geometric planes and solids, giving the painting's surface a lively, almost polyhedral appearance. This is despite the painter's display of a very summary, almost impressionistic touch in his desire to emphasize the light and atmospheric vibrations detected on the objects. In this way, Guido Basso, despite the geometric rigor of the composition, manages to infuse liveliness and immediacy into the landscape theme.
Guido Basso (Genoa, 1923 – 1995). A student of Felice Casorati, he spent some time in Paris and Rome. He belonged to the Casana group in 1945 and exhibited from a young age in Genoese galleries (Galleria Rotta in 1948). He participated in various editions of the Venice Biennale between 1948 and 1956 and the Rome Quadrennial from 1955 to 1959.
