Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The painter Guido Borelli, in his work, displays an absolute predilection for genre scenes and views of small villages. In his works, he immortalizes a peaceful and tranquil existence, in a decidedly candid narrative with a realist flavour.
Guido Borelli's works fall within the genre genre not only because of their subjects—popular scenes—but also because of the painter's objective and highly didactic language. The work is always figurative in its clear, spacious frames, where Borelli demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect realistic rendering, rich in detail and anecdotal details. He does this without idealizing filters, but through a spontaneous representation that conveys reality as it is. Beyond this profound sense of truth, Borelli's artistic approach is marked by another essential quality. Formally, he does not shy away from using a cursive style, composed of rapid strokes, to ensure greater vivacity and freshness in his execution. Thus, his brushstrokes display a certain level of synthesis, without ever compromising the clarity of the anecdotal and realistic narrative, but just enough to imbue the scene with a delicate lyricism enhanced by the light.
Guido Borelli was born in Caluso in 1952. He came from an artistic background, and his family always encouraged him to develop his talent, starting from childhood. He won a competition at 13 and held his first exhibition at 17 at the Galleria Ars Plauda in Turin. After high school, he received his artistic training at the Accademia Albertina in Turin. Today, he has permanent exhibitions in art galleries in Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
