Description of the work
Description of the work
The visual arts have always had a close connection with the world of biology, both animal and plant. Graphic representation of the species studied has always been fundamental, both for classification and for scientific analysis. For this reason, objective representations of plants and animals have always been necessary, especially since the 18th and 19th centuries, a period when scientific research was most widespread. It is worth recalling how the studies of Linnaeus and Darwin, in particular, greatly stimulated the study and classification of animal and plant species. Guido Righetti's sculptural and pictorial production also fits into this context of objective and naturalistic representation.
The work, due to its extraordinary objective rendering, almost seems like an illustration useful for the classification and study of animal species. Its beauty lies in the scientific precision with which the subject is rendered. The drawing demonstrates extraordinary technical skill in capturing the image in every minute detail with a noble didactic intent. In this specific case, the coloring adds further value to the execution of the work, in that the didactic perfection is tempered by a highly dynamic pictorial style. In this way, the work acquires greater immediacy and freshness of execution.
Guido Righetti was born in Milan in 1875. He devoted himself primarily to sculpture, studying the objective reproduction of animals in depth. He was a student of Paolo Troubetzkoy. He exhibited in Florence, Milan, Como, and Monza and won the prize for his bronze Marabu at the 1915 San Francisco Exhibition. He died in 1958.
