Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this work, too, we can admire the technical prowess of painter Guido Tavagnacco in his portrayal of the human figure. Tavagnacco is an artist capable of a completely naturalistic rendering, characterized by a high level of formal purity. The facial features are depicted with great truth in a soft and smooth form. The contours are undefined, thanks to the diluted color that allows the subject to interact naturally with the space. In this way, Guido Tavagnacco's artistic practice is imbued, despite the strength of tradition, with contemporary expressiveness, whose modernity is discernible precisely in the incompleteness and indeterminacy of the subject. Indeed, the entire pictorial layer is vibrant with light, and the space is unified in a coherent atmosphere.
Guido Tavagnacco (Moimacco 1920 - Udine 1990) graduated from the Art School of Venice in 1942, where he also attended the courses directed by Saetti and Cesetti at the Academy of Fine Arts. Over the course of fifty years, he pursued an intense and productive career as a painter, which continued uninterrupted until his death. His love of art is evident not only in his thousands of drawings, watercolors, and oils, but also in his sixty solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad and his participation in over three hundred group exhibitions. His works are held in numerous public institutions, in the Modern Art Gallery of Udine, in other museums, and with private collectors around the world. An eclectic and accomplished painter, he also extended his interest to graphic art and sculpture: he designed the monuments erected in memory of the fallen partisans in Manzano, Premariacco, Moimacco, Monfalcone, and Faedis. Also noteworthy are his religious subjects, including the Stations of the Cross in the parish church of Moimacco. Through a bequest, his hometown acquired several of his paintings, which were collected in the Civic Cultural Center named after him.
